Details of the Task as Shown to Mecanical Turk Workers

This work originates from the urge to get to know the anonymous people who constitute this vast and hidden labour system in a straight-forward way: who are these people; in what kind of spaces are they working for Amazon; and what devices do they use to produce all these information for this platform?

I have therefore commissioned the workers to do the following task: switch off their computer monitors and start taking a video of it while gradually zooming out - until their entire computer set-ups and workspaces were in the frame.

These videos can be seen as a multilayered portraits for these workers - not only do we see their work desks and their rooms, but also their ghostly silhouettes which emerge from close-up shots of the very physical details of the screens (fingerprints, scratches, dust, etc.). These videos are then edited into loops and screened inside dozen of monitors as screensavers.

The installation also adapts to different spaces: inside a mirror-lined walkway, the videos were shown inside suspended LCD screens, where workers are seemingly confined in a sea of floating screens from a different dimension.
